The world’s largest vertical ring Wet High Gradient Magnetic Separator (WHIMS) recently rolled off the production line at leading Chinese magnetic separation equipment and technology supplier, Shandong Huate Magnet Technology Co, based in Linqu Economic Development Area, Weifang City, Shandong. Specifically, the LHGC–6000 vertical ring WHIMS has the largest diameter (6 m) of ring in the world .

After more than a year of research and development, Huate’s R&D team has solved a number of “bottleneck” technologies and key core technical problems such as large-scale coil heat dissipation, transportation of oversized and overweight components, and automatic detection of key components.

The LHGC–6000 intelligent vertical ring WHIMS has a 6 m diameter of its core ring component, 11.8 m equipment height and 700 t weight, with a background field strength of ≤1.8T (Tesla). It can process hematite up to 1,300 t/h, quartz sand up to 800 t/h, which is 8 times that of the 3-meter vertical ring WHGMS, and the energy consumption per ton of ore processing is reduced by more than 60%, which greatly reduces the operating cost; occupying a small space per ton of ore output, and the process layout is simple, which can save more than 30% of the engineering investment, and meets the demand for extra-large equipment of large-scale mining enterprises with an output of tens of millions of tons.

The excitation coil adopts oil–cooled external circulation for heat dissipation, and the extra–large components such as the vertical ring adopts a split structure and modular assembly. It has functions such as automatic liquid level adjustment, automatic lubrication, real–time detection and alarm of pressure and temperature, and realizes intelligent operation. The Internet of Things and big data analysis technologies have been adopted to realise remote operation and maintenance, fault diagnosis and full life cycle management.

Its potential is mainly in the separation of weak magnetic minerals such as iron oxide, titanium, manganese, chromium, cobalt and rare earth minerals, or in the removal of iron and impurities from non–metallic minerals such as quartz and feldspar. Huate Magnet has produced more than 2,200 vertical ring high gradient magnetic separators for applications in China and around the world, accumulatively creating social benefits of more than 10 billion US dollars.
